Wall panelling and feature walls
A feature wall is decoration, but it is fixed to a structure and often hides cables. Both need planning before the panels arrive.

Panelling and feature walls are used to give a living room, majlis or bedroom a focal point — behind a TV, behind a bed, or along a dining wall. Materials range from painted MDF profiles to timber slats, stone or porcelain cladding and fabric panels. Each has a different weight, fixing method and response to heat and humidity.
Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.
The wall behind matters. Most villa walls are block, which takes fixings well but is rarely flat; panels may need a batten frame to sit straight. Feature walls also tend to collect services: a TV wall needs power and data hidden behind it, a bed wall needs bedside switches and sockets, and integrated LED lighting needs a driver that can be reached later.
What matters most on this page
Material sets the fixing
Lightweight panels may be bonded; heavier timber or stone needs mechanical fixings into the wall.
Plan services behind it
Sockets, data, switches and lighting are positioned before the panelling is fixed.
Allow for movement
Timber moves with temperature and humidity. Gaps and fixing methods allow for it.
Common feature wall types
TV walls
Panelling or a recess with concealed cable routes, a socket and data point behind the screen, and space for equipment nearby.
Headboard walls
Panelling behind the bed with integrated reading lights and switches either side.
Slatted timber
Adds texture and some acoustic softening. Needs a stable backing and a finish suited to indoor air.
Before the panels are ordered
Mark every socket and switch
Cut-outs in panelling are made to these positions.
Check the wall is sound
Hollow-sounding render or damp patches need repairing first.
Decide on integrated lighting
LED strips and their drivers are planned into the frame, with an access point for the driver.
Questions we are often asked
Can panelling hide damp?
It should not. Damp behind panelling gets worse unseen. The cause is found and fixed before anything covers the wall.
Will a TV mount through panelling?
Yes, if the mount fixes through to the structure or to a reinforced frame planned at the right position.
Does stone cladding need special fixing?
Heavier stone needs mechanical fixings or a suitable adhesive system, depending on the weight and the wall.
