Renovating a villa entrance hall

The entrance hall handles every arrival and departure. It needs storage, a durable floor and light that welcomes.

Contemporary stone-clad villa with palms and a covered car port

Shoes, bags, keys, deliveries and guests all pass through the entrance. Without storage, they pile up there. A renovation usually adds built-in storage for shoes and coats, a surface for keys and post, a mirror and a seat for putting shoes on, while keeping the route into the house clear.

Room guides follow one space from how it should work when finished back to the hidden work that makes that possible.

The floor takes sand and dirt from outside, so it needs to be hard-wearing and easy to clean, and it often continues into the rest of the ground floor. Lighting sets the first impression and should switch on easily from the door, with softer light for evenings.

What matters most on this page

  • Storage at the door

Shoe cupboards and coat storage keep clutter out of the house.

  • Hard-wearing floor

The entrance floor takes the most dirt and wear in the house.

  • Light on arrival

Switches at the door, with softer lighting for evenings.

Entrance hall elements

  • Shoe storage

Ventilated cupboards or shelves sized for the household’s shoes.

  • Mirror and console

A last check before leaving and a place for keys and post.

  • Seating

A bench for putting shoes on, often with storage beneath.

Before planning the entrance

  • Count the shoes

Family shoe storage needs are often underestimated.

  • Check door swing

Storage must not block the front door or internal doors.

  • Decide the floor

Whether it continues through the house or changes at the entrance.

Questions we are often asked

How do I stop sand coming into the house?

A good mat inside and outside the door and a hard floor that is easy to sweep help most.

Should shoe cupboards be ventilated?

Yes. Ventilated doors or vents prevent odours building up.

Can the entrance have a statement light?

Yes, if the ceiling height allows. It needs a fixing point and support planned in the ceiling.

Where should the light switches go?

Beside the front door at a height reachable with full hands, with a two-way switch if the hall also connects to stairs or a corridor.

Tell us about the property

Tell us the room, how it is used today and what you want it to become. A few photographs and rough measurements are enough to start.
