Converting a room into a home gym
A home gym puts heavy loads, impact and heat into a room designed for none of them.

Spare bedrooms, maid’s rooms, garages and basements are common choices for a home gym. The room has to carry weights and machines, take the impact of dropped dumbbells, stay cool during exercise and keep noise from travelling through the house.
Room guides follow one space from how it should work when finished back to the hidden work that makes that possible.
The floor is the starting point. Rubber gym flooring protects the slab and reduces noise, but heavy equipment on an upper floor may need checking. Cooling is the next priority: exercise adds heat and humidity, so the room needs reliable AC and ventilation. Mirrors and wall-mounted racks need solid fixings into the wall structure.
What matters most on this page
Protect the floor

Questions we are often asked
Can a home gym go upstairs?
Light equipment usually can. Heavy machines and free weights on an upper floor should be checked first.
What flooring suits a home gym?
Rubber tiles or rolls are common; thicker areas suit free weights.
Does a treadmill need its own circuit?
Some do. Check the manufacturer’s requirements before deciding the socket.
How do I stop the gym smelling?
Air movement and cooling matter most. An extract or a regular change of air, and rubber flooring that is cleaned, keep the room fresh.
