Renovating a majlis

A majlis is designed for gatherings. Everything in the renovation follows from how many guests it hosts and how often.

Contemporary stone-clad villa with palms and a covered car port

A majlis is usually arranged with seating around the walls so everyone can see and speak to each other, a clear centre for serving, and enough space for guests to arrive and greet the host. Many villas have a majlis near the entrance, sometimes with its own door, so guests do not pass through the family areas.

Room guides follow one space from how it should work when finished back to the hidden work that makes that possible.

Hosting shapes the technical work. A full majlis needs cooling sized for many people, lighting that is warm and even, sockets where serving equipment and chargers are used, and a guest washroom close by. Acoustics matter too — hard floors and bare walls make a crowded room loud, so rugs, upholstery and wall finishes are chosen with that in mind.

What matters most on this page

  • Seating around the walls

Built-in or loose seating sets the room’s shape and where power is needed.

  • Cool for a full room

Many guests add heat. Cooling is planned for a full gathering.

  • Guest access

A separate entrance and a nearby washroom keep family areas private.

Majlis details

  • Lighting

Warm, even light with dimming; feature lighting in a ceiling or on a wall adds character.

  • Finishes

Durable fabrics, rugs and wall treatments that soften sound and wear well.

  • Serving

A sideboard or small serving area with power for urns and warmers.

Before planning the majlis

  • Estimate the usual gathering

It sets the seating length and the cooling.

  • Check the route for guests

From the entrance to the majlis and to the washroom.

  • Plan power for serving

Where tea and coffee will be prepared or kept warm.

Questions we are often asked

Can a living room become a majlis?

Yes, especially if it is near the entrance. A separate guest washroom nearby makes a big difference.

Should the majlis have built-in seating?

Built-in seating gives a traditional look and maximises places. Loose seating is more flexible.

How do I reduce noise in a full majlis?

Rugs, upholstered seating, curtains and soft wall finishes absorb sound and make conversation easier.

Tell us about the property

Tell us the room, how it is used today and what you want it to become. A few photographs and rough measurements are enough to start.
