Built-in wardrobes for villa bedrooms

A built-in wardrobe is joinery made for one wall. Planning the inside matters more than choosing the doors.

Built-in wardrobes make use of the full height and width of a wall, and in villa bedrooms they are often the largest piece of joinery in the house. The first decisions are internal: how much hanging space, how many drawers, where shoes and luggage go, and how the space is split between two people. Doors and finishes come after.

Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.

Because the wardrobe is fixed to walls that are rarely perfectly straight, it is scribed — trimmed to the wall on site — so there are no gaps at the edges. Wardrobes on external walls also need a little thought about air, because a closed cupboard against a wall that gets warm and cool can collect moisture and smell musty.

What matters most on this page

  • Plan the inside first

Hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage based on what each person actually owns.

  • Scribed to the walls

Panels are trimmed on site to follow the wall so the wardrobe looks built in, not placed.

  • Let it breathe

A small gap or vent behind wardrobes on external walls helps avoid trapped moisture.

Details that make a wardrobe work

  • Internal lighting

Lights that switch on with the door make dark corners usable. Their supply is planned before the wardrobe is installed.

  • Full height or bulkhead

Running to the ceiling avoids a dust shelf; a bulkhead above suits ceilings with AC vents nearby.

  • Mirrors

A mirror on the inside or outside of a door saves wall space elsewhere in the room.

Before the wardrobe is designed

  • Measure what you store

Long dresses, suits, folded clothes, shoes and luggage each need different space.

  • Check the wall behind

Sockets, AC drains or switches on that wall may need moving.

  • Decide the doors

Sliding or hinged, mirrored or plain. It affects the room clearance and the internal layout.

Questions we are often asked

Can the wardrobe hide an AC unit?

It can sometimes box around one, but the unit must stay accessible for servicing and its airflow must not be blocked.

Why do my clothes smell musty?

Often trapped moisture behind or inside a closed wardrobe. Ventilation and a dry wall behind it usually solve it.

Should wardrobes go to the ceiling?

Full height looks cleaner and gives more storage. Top cupboards suit things used rarely.
