Selecting bathroom sanitaryware

Basins, toilets and taps are chosen from catalogues, but they meet each other on site. The combinations are what need checking.

Renovated bathroom with a glass walk-in shower, timber vanity and dark wall tiles

Sanitaryware is usually chosen piece by piece, often from different suppliers. Problems appear only on site: a tap that splashes over the edge of a shallow basin, a spout too short to reach the middle of a vessel basin, a toilet that projects too far for the room, or brassware finishes that do not quite match because they came from different ranges.

Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.

Choosing everything together, and before first fix, avoids most of that. The supply and waste positions depend on the exact models, and some products — concealed valves, wall-mounted taps, frames for wall-hung toilets — must be installed inside the wall long before the visible parts arrive.

What matters most on this page

  • Choose as a set

Basin and tap, toilet and flush plate, shower valve and head. Check how each pair works together.

  • Concealed parts arrive first

Valves, frames and wall-mounted tap bodies are installed at first fix, so they are ordered early.

  • One finish family

Chrome, brushed or coloured finishes vary between ranges. Keep brassware from one range where possible.

Combinations to check

  • Basin and tap

The spout must reach the right point in the basin, at the right height, so water does not splash out.

  • Toilet projection

How far the pan comes out from the wall decides the clear space in front of it in a small room.

  • Shower set

The valve, head and any hand shower must suit the water pressure available.

Before ordering sanitaryware

  • Collect product drawings

Dimensions and connection positions for every item, given to whoever sets out the first fix.

  • Check water pressure

Some showers and taps need more pressure than the property provides.

  • Order concealed parts first

They must be on site before the walls are closed.

Questions we are often asked

Can I change my tap choice after first fix?

A deck-mounted tap is easy to change. A wall-mounted tap or a concealed valve usually is not, because its body is already in the wall.

Why does my basin splash?

Often the tap spout is too high or too short for the basin, or the flow is strong for a shallow bowl.

Is it worth buying everything from one supplier?

It simplifies matching finishes and returns, but it is not essential if the combinations are checked.
