Creating a walk-in wardrobe

A walk-in wardrobe is a small room full of fabric. Air and light decide whether it is pleasant or musty.

Walk-in wardrobes are often created from a small spare bedroom, part of a large master bedroom or the passage between bedroom and en-suite. The layout depends on the width: one side of hanging and shelving in a narrow space, two sides or a U-shape where there is room, with enough floor to turn and dress.

Room guides follow one space from how it should work when finished back to the hidden work that makes that possible.

Because it is an enclosed room, the wardrobe needs ventilation. Clothes stored in still, warm air can smell musty, especially next to a bathroom. An AC outlet, a return path or a small extract keeps air moving. Lighting is the other essential: a dark walk-in wardrobe is frustrating, and good light at the mirror helps with dressing.

What matters most on this page

  • Width sets the layout

Single-sided, double-sided or U-shaped, with space to turn in the middle.

  • Keep the air moving

Cooling and ventilation prevent musty smells, especially beside an en-suite.

  • Light everything

Ceiling light plus lighting in rails or shelves so nothing is hidden in shadow.

Inside a walk-in wardrobe

  • Hanging zones

Long hanging for dresses and robes, double rails for shirts and trousers.

  • Drawers and shelves

Drawers for folded clothes, open shelves or cubbies for shoes and bags.

  • Mirror and seating

A full-length mirror with good light and, if space allows, a small seat.

Before designing the wardrobe

  • Measure the space

Width, depth and ceiling height decide the layout.

  • Count what you store

Long and short hanging, folded clothes, shoes and bags.

  • Check cooling

Whether the space has an AC outlet or needs one.

Questions we are often asked

Can a spare bedroom become a walk-in wardrobe?

Yes, and it often adds the most storage. Check the door position and the AC.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need a door?

Not always. Open access from the bedroom is common; a door helps if dust or light is a concern.

How do I stop clothes smelling musty?

Air movement and a dry room. Avoid storing damp items and make sure the space is ventilated.

Tell us about the property

Tell us the room, how it is used today and what you want it to become. A few photographs and rough measurements are enough to start.
