Converting a room into a home office
A home office has to work for long days and video calls. Desk, light, quiet and connection decide whether it does.

Spare bedrooms, maid’s rooms and corners of large living rooms are commonly turned into home offices. The essentials are simple: a desk in a position with good light and no glare on the screen, enough power and a reliable network connection at the desk, and enough sound separation that calls are private and household noise stays out.
Room guides follow one space from how it should work when finished back to the hidden work that makes that possible.
Video calls add a requirement: light on your face rather than behind you. A desk facing a window with a lamp to the side usually works better than a desk with its back to the window. A tidy background — shelving or a plain wall — matters more than people expect.
What matters most on this page
Desk position first
Light from the side or front, no window behind for calls, no glare on the screen.
Power and data at the desk
Enough sockets and a wired network point where the desk will be.
Quiet when needed
A solid door, sealed gaps and soft finishes keep calls private.
Elements of a home office
Lighting
Even ceiling light plus a desk lamp; avoid lights directly behind the screen.
Storage
Shelving or cupboards so the background and desk stay clear.
Cooling
Computers add heat; a room used all day needs reliable cooling.
Before converting the room
Check the network signal
If Wi-Fi is weak, plan a cable or an access point.
Decide the desk wall
It sets the sockets, data point and lighting.
Consider sound
Which side of the room faces the noisiest part of the house.
Questions we are often asked
Can a maid’s room become a home office?
Often, if it can be ventilated and cooled properly. Many have small windows, so lighting matters.
How do I improve video call quality?
Light your face from the front or side, reduce echo with soft furnishings, and use a wired connection where possible.
Is a glass door suitable?
It lets light through but carries more sound. A solid door with good seals is quieter.
