Lighting a retail unit
Retail lighting sells the product. It also adds heat to a unit that is already working hard to stay cool.

Shops use lighting differently from offices. General light makes the space safe and inviting; accent light picks out displays, mannequins and featured products; and the colour quality of the light decides whether fabrics, food or cosmetics look the way they should. A lighting plan is drawn to the merchandising layout, not to a ceiling grid.
Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.
Lighting also generates heat, and a brightly lit shop in a warm climate adds load to the cooling. Efficient fittings, sensible lighting levels and controls that dim or switch off display lighting outside trading hours help keep the unit comfortable and the running costs reasonable.
What matters most on this page
Light to the merchandising plan
Accent lights follow the displays, so the layout comes first.
Colour quality matters
Good colour rendering shows products accurately, which matters most for fashion and cosmetics.
Control the hours
Timers and scenes match lighting to opening times and cleaning.
Retail lighting layers
Track spotlights
Adjustable and repositionable as displays change through the season.
Shelf and cabinet lighting
Integrated into joinery to light products from close range.
Shopfront and window lighting
Draws attention from outside, often within the landlord’s guidelines.
Before the lighting is designed
Fix the merchandising layout
Displays decide where light is needed.
Choose a colour temperature
Consistent across the store, matched to the brand.
Check the landlord’s rules
Some malls control window and frontage lighting.
Questions we are often asked
Why do products look different in-store?
Light with poor colour rendering or mixed colour temperatures can change how colours appear.
Is track lighting suitable for small shops?
Yes. It is flexible and lets a small space change with each season’s display.
Does lighting affect cooling?
All lighting adds heat. Efficient fittings and sensible levels reduce the load on the AC.
Should window displays have their own lighting?
Usually, on a separate circuit with a timer, so the window can stay lit after closing where the landlord allows it.
