Specifying retail display joinery

Display joinery is handled, leaned on and restocked every day. It has to look like the brand and wear like equipment.

Café interior with arched wall recesses, pendant lights and banquette seating

Shop joinery includes wall bays, freestanding gondolas or tables, cash and wrap counters, and sometimes window displays. It is made to suit the products: shelf depths for boxes, hanging rails for garments, glass cabinets for small valuable items. Getting those dimensions right matters more than the finish, because it decides how much stock can be shown and how easily it is restocked.

Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.

Durability matters next. Edges get knocked by trolleys and bags, shelves are loaded and unloaded constantly, and counters take a lot of contact. Hard-wearing laminates, solid surfaces, metal edges and adjustable shelving keep joinery looking right through seasonal changes.

What matters most on this page

  • Sized to the product

Shelf depths, rail heights and cabinet sizes start from what is sold.

  • Built to be handled

Edges, surfaces and fittings are chosen for constant contact.

  • Flexible for seasons

Adjustable shelving and modular units allow the display to change.

Display joinery elements

  • Wall bays

Slatwall, adjustable shelves or hanging rails along the perimeter, often with integrated lighting.

  • Cash counter

Designed for the till, payment terminal, bags and packaging, with power and data built in.

  • Freestanding units

Tables and gondolas that can move as the layout changes, with stable bases.

Before the joinery is drawn

  • List the product types

Sizes, weights and how each will be displayed.

  • Plan power at the counter

Tills, terminals and lighting need sockets and data in the right places.

  • Allow for restocking

Storage under counters and units for backup stock where space allows.

Questions we are often asked

Can joinery be reused in a new store?

Modular units can often be moved. Built-in joinery usually has to be remade for a new space.

What finish lasts on shop shelves?

High-pressure laminate, powder-coated metal and solid surfaces resist wear better than paint or soft veneers.

Do display units need lighting?

Integrated lighting makes products stand out, but needs power and accessible drivers planned in.
