How a kitchen renovation is sequenced in Dubai

The kitchen is the room you use most and the one that is unusable longest, because the work comes in two separate visits with a made-to-order gap between them.

Kitchen with a fluted island, white cabinetry and a dark stone splashback

A kitchen renovation has an unusual shape. The room is opened and the services are moved first, then it is closed again while the cabinetry is manufactured and the stone templated. Only when those arrive does the room come back together. That gap is where most of the waiting sits, and it is planned rather than accidental.

Timeline guides explain the order the trades work in and which decisions hold up which stage. Durations depend on approvals, long-lead materials and how much is changing, so they are described as stages rather than promises.

The practical consequence is that a temporary kitchen arrangement is not an afterthought — it is part of the programme. Deciding early where food will be prepared and where the fridge will live makes the difference between a manageable few stages and a household in chaos.

What matters most on this page

  • Strip-out is quick, first fix is not

Units come out fast. Moving the plumbing, waste, circuits and the extract duct is the stage that decides the rest of the programme.

  • Cabinetry is made, not bought

Once the room is measured and the layout fixed, the units go into production. Nothing else in the room can be finished until they are installed.

  • Stone is templated after the units

Worktops are measured from the installed cabinetry, then cut. It is a separate step with its own gap.

Where the waiting actually happens

  • Between first fix and installation

The services are in, the walls are made good, and the room waits for joinery and appliances. This is the longest single gap in the programme.

  • Between installation and templating

The worktop cannot be measured until the units are in and level. Cutting and fitting then follows.

  • Between templating and completion

Splashback, upstands and sealing come last, followed by the appliances and the commissioning of extraction.

Plan the kitchen programme around these

  1. 01

Settle appliances before the cabinetry is drawn

Dimensions and power requirements drive the units. A late change means remade cabinets.

  2. 02

Agree the extract route before ceilings close

If the duct has to travel, the route has to be planned while the void is still open.

  3. 03

Set up a temporary kitchen on day one

A sink and power in another room make the unusable period far easier to live with.

Questions we are often asked

Can the kitchen be used at all during the work?

During first fix, usually not. Between first fix and installation the room is empty, and it only becomes usable again once appliances and the worktop are in.

What delays a kitchen most often?

Late appliance decisions and a change of layout after the units have been ordered. Both force remakes rather than adjustments.

Does a same-layout replacement take less time?

Yes. Keeping the services where they are removes first fix almost entirely and shortens the whole sequence.
