Renovating a studio apartment
In a studio, every decision affects the whole home. The renovation is about making one room behave like several.

A studio combines sleeping, living, cooking and often working in one space, with a bathroom off it. The renovation goal is usually to create zones — so the bed is not the first thing seen from the door, the kitchen does not dominate the living area, and there is somewhere to work that is not the bed. Light, storage and a consistent finish do most of that work.
Element pages explain one part of a larger renovation in detail: what is being chosen, what the installation involves, and where the cost and time usually sit.
Studios also tend to be investment properties, which changes the brief. Durable, neutral finishes and storage that suits any tenant often matter more than personal style. If you live in it yourself, the balance shifts towards comfort and the way you actually spend your evenings.
What matters most on this page
Zone without closing in
Screens, shelving or a change of floor and lighting define areas without blocking light.
Storage is built in
Beds with storage, full-height cupboards and hidden kitchen storage keep surfaces clear.
One palette
A consistent material and colour scheme makes a single room feel larger and calmer.
Where studio renovations focus
The sleeping zone
A partial screen, a curtain track or open shelving gives the bed some separation and privacy.
The compact kitchen
Integrated appliances and closed cabinets make the kitchen read as part of the living space.
Lighting by zone
Separate circuits or lamps for each area so the room changes as the day does.
Before planning the studio
Decide who it is for
Your own home or a rental. It changes the finishes and the storage.
Measure everything
In a studio, a few centimetres decide whether a sofa or a desk fits.
Check building rules
Working hours, noise and approvals apply as in any apartment.
Questions we are often asked
Can a studio have a separate bedroom?
A partial partition or screen can create one, provided light and AC still reach both areas. Building approval may be needed.
Is a Murphy bed a good idea?
It frees a lot of floor in the day. It needs a strong wall fixing and the discipline to fold it away.
What finishes suit a rental studio?
Hard-wearing flooring, washable paint and simple joinery that tolerates frequent move-ins.
