Debris and cleanliness during a renovation

A renovation creates waste every day. How it is removed and how the site is kept clean affects the whole household.

Room stripped back during a renovation, with door frames removed and materials stacked

Strip-out generates the most debris: old tiles, plaster, cabinets and fittings. It must be bagged, carried out and removed from the property, often along agreed routes and at set times in apartments and gated communities.

Decision guides set out how to judge a quote, a programme or a contractor fairly, so the comparison is made on like-for-like information.

Daily cleaning keeps dust down, routes safe and the rest of the home usable. At the end, a thorough final clean removes fine dust from surfaces, fixtures and AC grilles before handover.

Questions we are often asked

Is debris left on site?

It should be removed regularly, not stored where it creates hazards.

Does final cleaning include AC grilles?

It should include visible grilles; filters may need replacing.

Who cleans shared areas?

Usually the contractor, to the building’s requirements.

Will there be a skip outside the house?

It depends on the community. Some allow skips; others require bagged debris to be removed by vehicle at set times.
