Paint or wallpaper

Paint and wallpaper give different finishes, different durability and different effort to change. The room decides which suits.

Paint is the default because it is quick, cheap to change and easy to touch up. Wallpaper brings pattern and texture that paint cannot match, but it is more work to prepare for, harder to change and, in humid rooms, more likely to lift at the edges. The choice is usually pattern against practicality.

Comparison guides set real options side by side and say when each one suits, rather than naming a winner for every home.

In Dubai, rooms with humidity — bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere near an AC or a window that sweats — favour paint or a moisture-tolerant wallcovering. Wallpaper suits dry, low-traffic rooms where its pattern is the point of the wall.

What matters most on this page

  • Pattern and texture

Wallpaper gives pattern and depth; paint gives a clean, even finish.

  • Durability in humidity

Paint is the safer choice in rooms that see moisture; wallpaper can lift.

  • Changing it later

Paint is easy to recoat; wallpaper is more work to remove and replace.

What each finish involves

  • Paint

Wall preparation, priming and two or more coats, with an even, cleanable finish.

  • Wallpaper

A smooth, sized wall and careful hanging, with edges that stay down.

  • Preparation

Both need a sound, smooth wall; wallpaper is less forgiving of imperfect plaster.

Before choosing

  • Check the room

Humidity and traffic decide whether wallpaper will last.

  • Decide the look

Pattern from wallpaper, or a clean painted finish.

  • Think about change

How often you redecorate decides how much the effort matters.

Putting it into practice

Match the finish to the room. In humid rooms — bathrooms, kitchens, walls that sweat — choose paint or a moisture-tolerant wallcovering, because wallpaper can lift. Use wallpaper in dry, low-traffic rooms where its pattern is the point. Prepare the wall properly either way, and remember paint is far easier to recoat when the room changes.

Common mistakes

  • Wallpaper in a humid room

Paper in a bathroom or kitchen can lift and stain at the edges. Paint or a moisture-tolerant vinyl lasts better there.

  • Wallpaper over poor plaster

Wallpaper shows every imperfection in the wall. The surface has to be smooth and sized, or the finish lets the room down.

Questions we are often asked

Is wallpaper a problem in humidity?

In a bathroom or kitchen it can lift or stain. A moisture-tolerant vinyl, or paint, is safer in those rooms.

Which lasts longer?

A good paint job is easier to maintain and touch up. Wallpaper can last for years in a dry room but is harder to repair.

Can wallpaper be removed easily later?

Some types strip more easily than others, but removal is always more work than repainting a wall.
