Renovation noise and your neighbours

Neighbours accept a lot of noise when they know what is happening and when it will stop.

Open-plan apartment with a sofa area, dining table and a fitted kitchen along one wall

Most communities and buildings set working hours for noisy work. Within those limits, a renovation still affects neighbours: drilling, deliveries, parking and shared corridors. Informing them before work starts, and keeping to agreed hours, prevents most complaints.

Decision guides set out how to judge a quote, a programme or a contractor fairly, so the comparison is made on like-for-like information.

In apartments, the impact is closer. Noise travels through slabs and walls, lifts are shared, and debris must be removed through agreed routes. Building management often requires notices and protection of common areas.

What matters most on this page

  • Tell neighbours first

A short note with dates and a contact number goes a long way.

  • Keep to working hours

Follow community or building rules for noisy work.

  • Protect shared spaces

Corridors, lifts and entrances are protected and kept clean.

Reducing the impact

  • Noisy work windows

Group the loudest tasks into agreed periods.

  • Deliveries and parking

Schedule deliveries and keep access clear.

  • Cleanliness

Clean shared areas daily and remove debris promptly.

  • Vibration

Breaking tiles or screed transmits vibration through the structure, which neighbours below and beside notice more than airborne noise.

Before work starts

  • Check the rules

Working hours and notice requirements from the community or building.

  • Inform neighbours

With dates and a contact person.

  • Agree routes

    For deliveries and debris.

Questions we are often asked

What if a neighbour complains?

Listen, check that work is within agreed hours, and adjust where possible.

Are weekends allowed?

That depends on the community or building rules.

Who protects the lift?

Usually the contractor, to the building’s requirements.

How long does the noisiest part last?

Strip-out and breaking are usually the loudest stages and come at the start. Telling neighbours that helps them plan around it.
